Where we came from... where we are now.
On December 2, 2010, New Horizon Center, Inc. celebrated its 25th Anniversary of service to children and families. NHC is honored to have provided quality programs that have served thousands of youths and families.
With a $10,000 loan from (the late Jeff) and Catherine Crawford, New Horizon Center, Inc. (NHC) acquired the former Holy Angels Rectory located at 3790 North 12th Street in Milwaukee. As a non-profit corporation, NHC officially opened its doors on December 2, 1985, operating its first business unit, "New Horizon Center." Its first task was working exclusively with young delinquent males ages 16-18 from Ethan Allen and Lincoln Hills Schools for Boys.
The next chapter in NHCs history included taking on the challenge and meeting the needs of females via a residential care facility. This resulted in the opening of "A Positive Outlook" residential facility for young women in 1995 to meet the needs of this growing demographic in our community. Also in 1995, another opportunity presented itself and "A New Outlook" group home for males was opened. In 2000 ''New Horizon Center" and "A Positive Outlook" transitioned to group home agencies to accommodate the request for a less restrictive environment for youth. As part of its original mission, NHC continued to offer services above and beyond those traditionally required.
In 2007, the trend away from out-of-home care for children continued to grow and NHC met the need by opening a Child Placing Agency. This allowed NHC to broaden its program offerings and provide needed services to children and families in the foster care system. As a treatment foster care agency, NHC recruits, trains, and licenses foster parents, in addition to placing treatment foster children in loving homes.
2010 proved to be another milestone in the expansion of NHC with the opening of a Satellite Office at the Racine Urban League that focuses on meeting the treatment foster care demands in that community. Additionally, NHC contracted with Milwaukee Department of Health and Human Services Wraparound Milwaukee to bring about a Crisis Stabilization & Mentor Program.
To address the growing need of parents seeking a quality child care provider, NHC has embarked on another endeavor to support children and families by opening a Day Center. The facility opened in May of 2011 and accommodates up to 102 children ages 6 weeks to 12 years.
